"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: I also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're not alone. Several high-profile fans have also petitioned for the honor.

It's clear something is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their career playing gigs at local delicatessens with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their music videos often depict them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such boundless joy you inevitably think, "I wish to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate others to form a group."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the fourth Haim sister."

Grammy Nod

The group have called into a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," adds Alana. "But we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The record emerged from a period of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words detail endings and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That recent confidence called for a fresh approach – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," jokes Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Humor

The trio's honesty fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

One man left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Thus to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global fan base.

But the band will forever be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still making music."
