A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable growth of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these vital undertakings.
