The Reason this DNC Has Concealed their 2024 Election Autopsy: A Deep Dive.

The action by the Democratic National Committee to block the public viewing of its internal autopsy report on the last presidential race appears shocking yet not surprising. Averse to unpleasant candor, the party's leadership apparatus often functions closer to a communications shop rather than a political organization committed to building local power capable of prevailing at the polls.

An Environment That Avoids Dissent

Unwilling to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the committee has stayed under the influence of the previous administration all through this past year. Making public an official autopsy would have indicated that party leaders actually want to foster public discourse about the errors that enabled the former president to win re-election. Instead, the DNC is proceeding under the pretense that there are no lessons to understand following the tragic debacle of 2024.

Our guiding principle: is this good for winning elections? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from our fundamental goal," a rationale that has been offered for withholding the document.

Key Issues an Autopsy Might Have Explored

A genuine analysis worth its salt would tackle head-on a series of difficult topics. Among them are:

  • Voter Alienation: Losing among millions of voters who voted for the Democratic ticket in 2020 was decisive in the narrowly decided recent race.
  • The Decision to Run: The determined insistence of the incumbent to stay in the race, alongside a very late withdrawal, has been criticized as denying the party's base the chance for open primaries.
  • Losing Touch With Core Democratic Voters: Amid rising costs, the electoral effort allegedly accommodating elite contributors and not managing to confront the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Gaza Effect: An unwillingness to adjust an approach on a ongoing war reportedly led to losing significant blocs, notably among young people, Arab American communities, Muslim voters.
  • Losing Young Voter Backing: Research indicates a significant decline in votes for the candidate among voters aged 18-29.

A History Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold aligns with a recurring tendency to avoid uncomfortable facts. It echoes an episode where nearly all Democratic officeholder in Washington acquiesced to an incumbent's determination to seeking another term right up until a catastrophic public debate performance compelled a reversal.

At the same time, large majorities within the party's base had been continually telling researchers of their opposition to that candidate to be the nominee.

Financial Concerns

A substantive autopsy would also probe issues regarding where money went, such as how much money flowed to party strategists as well as ad buyers during a campaign which expended a staggering amount in a short period.

The Broader Issue

Fundamentally, the blockage regarding the analysis highlights a deference to the existing power structure who engineered a losing electoral effort. The signal for the party's base – which includes countless small donors – appears to be that they cannot be trusted to know what the insiders have learned based on an analysis drawing from extensive interviews.

A party unable to critically review its mistakes is unlikely to break free from the pattern which was so helpful to the rival party.
